Cape Town

The next 3 days are totally at your leisure in Cape Town. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world strategically situated at the south western tip of Africa. The city lies about 60km north of Cape Point, in a natural bowl, with the magnificent Table Mountain to the rear, and the vast Atlantic Ocean to the front. Cape Town, the Mother City, is historically, culturally and visually the most diverse, breathtakingly scenic and vibrant city in South Africa. There is so much to see and do. Explore the fabulous shops at the V&A waterfront or consider a trip to Robben Island or a trip up Table Mountain for dramatic views of the whole of the Cape Peninsula. We would highly recommend you prebook the excursions that are of interest (Table Mountain cannot be prebooked).

Cape Town to Pilanesberg

After your breakfast this morning at the hotel, you will be transferred to Cape Town airport for your flight to Johannesburg departing around mid-morning or lunchtime. On arrival in Johannesburg, look out for your name on the signboard held by your driver for your transfer through to your game lodge. This drive is about a total of 3.5 hours, mostly by tar road with the end of the journey within the game park, which already will be the start of your game experience. On arrival at your lodge, you will get a chance to freshen up and time permitting head out for your first 4x4 game drive to try and spot the Big 5. Ivory Tree Lodge (3 nights)

Ivory Tree Game Lodge is situated in the north eastern region of the Pilanesberg National Park, the closest point of entry is through Bakgatla Gate. Nestled in the basin of an ancient amphitheatre divided by riverine woodlands and elephant trails lies an exclusive lodge development site. The central facility includes a stunning feature pool, bar, conference room, dinning room, boma, reception and curio shop. The rooms are decorated in a range of earthy tones ranging from terra cottas to deep blues, the rooms have been carefully coordinated to ensure comfortable seating both indoors and out. The standard configuration includes two twin beds and in a limited number of rooms it is possible for to offer a king size bed. The lodge uses custom built 10 seater open game viewers which permit maximum all around visibility. The park is home to a wide variety of general game including the Big 5, in addition both species of rhino occur, namely black and white, and cheetah and wild dog. Each group of guests is assigned a personal guide who is tasked with interpreting the sights and sounds of the African bush. Your guide will spend time with you at dinners and is always around to ensure that you remain comfortable during your stay with us.

Pilanesberg National Park

The next two days is devoted to the wildlife in the park and taking in the facilities of your lodge. Included in your stay is dawn and afternoon/evening safaris and the hotel does have a swimming pool and lovely patio areas to enjoy the wildlife that comes to you while relaxing at the lodge.

Depart from Johannesburg Airport

Today you will be transferred back to Johannesburg airport for your return flight. The transfer will be around 3.5 hours depending on traffic.

Arrive North America

Arrive back into JFK or Washington on South African Airways in the early morning and connect to your hometown.



Day tours from Cape Town Hotel

Peninsula Tour - $83 pp Sep and Oct / $99 pp November to March

Sit back and relax as you will be driven along the exquisite stretch of coastline known as Millionaires Paradise, to the exclusive beach hamlet of Llandudno and then onto the charming working harbour of Hout Bay. From here you can embark on a seal island cruise (own account). Back on terra firma, you will wind along the legendary Chapman's Peak Drive, relishing the breathtaking ocean views, before arriving at our lunch spot of choice (own account): the wild and beautiful Cape of Good Hope. Travel back along the coast towards the city, visiting the historic naval port of Simon's Town and the endearing penguin colony at Boulders Beach. The day finishes back at your hotel in the late afternoon. For departures from November to March this tour changes slightly with a visit the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens to end off your day.


Winelands - $83 pp Sep and Oct / $89 November to March

This morning you are picked up for your Full Day Winelands Tour. A superb day dedicated to celebrating the glorious grape, the exceptional winelands region, and the heavenly scenery! The area's rich with history, and you can't help but feel it as you move through the region to experience a wine cellar tour and tasting, where you'll learn all about the process of winemaking, from grape to goblet. You visit the exquisite little town of Franschhoek, pass by the impressive Huguenot Monument, and in a town with a reputation for gourmet fare is where you will enjoy lunch (for own account). Wind your way to the heady heights of the Helshoogte Mountain Pass to meet the charming university town of Stellenbosch on the other side. Stroll through this little town, absorbing the quaintness, and sneaking into the odd shop or two! Enjoy a wine tasting at two different wine estates where you'll be able to purchase your favourite wine to take back home.


Walk to Freedom - $87 pp Sep and Oct / $91 November to March

Experience the wonderful raw energy of our Townships in one unforgettable morning. The day begins visiting District Six, and then continues to the oldest township Langa and its people. Strolling through Langa Township, you will pop in to a 'shebeen' (pub), observe the difference in housing quality and witnessing real progress being made in providing decent housing, new developments as well as the restoration of the old single quarters. Then from Langa to Khayelitsha the new kid on the block, the largest in Western Cape all swagger and strut. Large scale developments abound, housing, schools, shopping malls, clinics and many private organizations doing a marvelous job in providing social and other skills to the people at large. The day then finishes off on Robben Island, the tour starts with a 45 minute guided bus ride with commentary on the island. Formerly a political prison and a leper colony before that, the historic landmark of Robben Island was recently established as a museum, national monument and world heritage sight. Experience the conditions of incarceration - view Nelson Mandela's maximum security prison cell (Cell 5) and see the lime quarries. In the one, hard labor was served, in the other prisoners discussed strategy, freedom and the future. Later, many would develop eye problems as a result of the sun's reflection off the lime surfaces. This well-preserved landmark is a monument to the triumph of freedom, dignity and determination over humiliation and oppression. On Robben Island, visitor's movements are restricted by regulation to the bus and a Robben Island specialist guide. Tours of the island are conducted in large buses.
